Decker Barborek

Founder & Head Coach

Coach Decker is the Owner and Head Coach of the Northern Virginia Pole Vault Club, which he founded in the spring of 2023. Outside the club, he works full-time as a Budget Analyst for the Federal Government. Running NVPVC to expand pole vault opportunities in Northern Virginia has become his second profession and full-time passion.

Decker first picked up a pole as a freshman at Fairfax High School, admittedly to skip a tough workout, only to catch the vaulting bug and discover one of the most fun sports he’d ever tried. He went on to compete for George Mason University, finishing on the podium multiple times at the A10 Conference Championship for multiple events, earning both his B.S. and M.S. in Finance and a personal best of 4.98 meters (16’4”) in the process. He's been involved in pole vault for more than a decade and has since dedicated himself to helping athletes of all ages improve safely and confidently.

Known for his energy, humor, and long-winded explanations, Decker is the coach who can’t help breaking down every technical detail behind a jump. His talkative, over-explaining nature has become a running joke but also one of his greatest strengths, especially for athletes who want to understand why a change works. Within the club’s coaching team, he’s often the go-to resource for athletes who enjoy a deeper dive (or full lecture) into pole vault theory.

At practice, Decker’s enthusiasm is contagious, he celebrates big jumps as loudly as anyone and occasionally takes one himself. His goal is to make pole vault accessible, safe, and rewarding for everyone from elementary school newcomers to experienced vaulters rediscovering the sport.
